Story Behind the Work:
It’s okay not to love every part of Motherhood. When a woman creates life, it changes everything in her life: her body, her mind, and her heart. I became a mother in 2016. My husband and I were so excited to become parents, but I was unprepared for all the love that awaited me. I felt like my literal heart was ripped out of me. I looked at the baby girl and realized my heart had legs.
The Camellia flower symbolizes the yearning to be a mother. The suns symbolizes new beginnings. The spikes and the cut arm/leg on the body represent that our bodies will feel foreign to us as new mothers.
Tonantzin is what inspired my artwork. Tonantzin is a Nahuatl word that means "our mother." It refers to the archetype of Mother Earth, which is associated with fertility and the earth. Tonantzin is also the name of an Aztec goddess who is sometimes called Coatlicue.
